In the former Soviet republics of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan thousands of people continue to stage political movements, hoping to bring democracy, economic reform, government transparency, free media and a better future for their people. While some countries have already successfully shed their dark communist pasts by joining the European Union or mounting peaceful "color" and "flower" revolutions, many other countries that once suffered under the Soviet sphere of influence still cannot shake the yoke of political corruption, government incompetence and iron-fisted control.
